THS - Letter to Families - April 23rd, 2020

April 23, 2020

Dear Troy Jr/Sr High School Students and Parents/Guardians:

We hope that you are all continuing to stay safe during these unprecedented times. We thank you for your support as we have transitioned through various stages of remote learning due to COVID-19.

As of April 9th, we all learned that schools in the state of Pennsylvania would be closed for the rest of the school year. With this news, we began a Phase 2 model which included providing review and enrichment of Quarter 3 material to our students. At this time, participation was not mandatory, attendance was not taken, and grades were not recorded.

On April 16th, the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education announced his expectation for all school districts in the Commonwealth to move toward Phase 3 - planned instruction. This makes remote participation mandatory for all students. We intend to implement a plan that meets this requirement and still allows flexibility for students and families during the pandemic. This letter should help to explain how this will work.

For Students in Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment Courses, and Troy Virtual Academy:
  • Students have already moved to Phase 3 Planned Instruction. As we move ahead, they will continue to Quarter 4 beginning April 29, 2020.

For All Students:

  • On April 29, 2020, all students will move to Phase 3 Planned Instruction in Quarter 4.
  • We will use the Canvas learning management system. Students should already be familiar with this platform.
  • Participation is mandatory. Failure to participate will result in failure to pass and failure to obtain credits towards graduation requirements.
  • Attendance will be reported weekly and reflect student participation.
  • Attendance calls for nonparticipation will go out on Thursdays.
  • Teachers will continue to be available by email Monday – Friday from 8am-3:15pm.
  • Teachers will still hold scheduled office hours.
  • Teachers will post objectives and class content on Canvas each Wednesday.
  • Students who do not have online access for any reason should let their teachers or the school know so that a paper copy of work may be sent home.
  • If mail is chosen, a self-addressed stamped envelope will be included with work, so it can be returned to the school.
  • Work will be due the following Wednesday, one week after it was assigned.
  • Grades will be recorded weekly by teachers in Power School.
  • Second Semester grades will be recorded on student transcripts as pass or fail.

We have been proud of student participation thus far, and we are looking forward to moving on with our Continuation of Education Plan. As always, thank you for all your support and for working with us. We know that none of this has been easy and difficult demands are being placed on families. We appreciate all you are doing. We appreciate you; we truly miss the students and look forward to a return to normalcy. Please feel free to contact us if necessary. We are in this together! It is crucial that your children stay active with us throughout the duration of the closure. Stay safe and thank you for all you are doing!

Sincerely,

Daniel C. Brenner Troy Jr/Sr High School Principal
